4 Tips to Market a Technical Product

by | Nov 9, 2019 | Blog

In my digital marketing career, I have had the opportunity to craft different kinds of marketing strategies for my various clients. Some of the most challenging among these involved coming up with ways to market technical products, especially those that make use of new technology that people aren’t that familiar with.

When it comes to marketing technical products, several challenges crop up. For instance, you have to find a way to get your target audience to understand the product (sometimes even the tech it uses), get them to accept it and also use it.

Here are 4 tips on how to successfully market technical products:

Provide as much marketing information and material as needed.

When introducing a new technical product (or any product really) into the market, you need to familiarize your customers with your product. The information you give depends on the product but you should look into coming up with marketing material that covers the following:

  • The product’s background. Explain things like what the product is, who makes it, etc.
  • The value that your product brings. Why would customers use it? What does it do and how does it help them?
  • How to safely use it. When explaining this, keep your target audience in mind and use language that they’re familiar with.

Partner with others in the same space.

Build and cultivate relationships with other industry players who can augment your product then find ways to collaborate with them. This would boost your product’s visibility and credibility especially if you collaborate with others who are already established. They can help you gain a new perspective on how to market your product that you’d nenver thought of before.

Just make sure that this is a mutually beneficial partnership and that you’re providing value for them in return.

Become a resource for information.

Lack of knowledge surrounding the product you’re marketing can be a golden opportunity for you to educate the public about the product while marketing it. You can use what’s at your disposal from blog posts to short videos, social media pages, a website, etc., to become an invaluable source of information about the product, the tech powering it, how to use it and anything else that might educate people. This way, you’re not only indirectly promoting the product, but also boosting your credibility.

Explore product “value addition”.

Sometimes when marketing a technical product, you need to explore additional services you can offer on the same e.g. if you’re marketing an app that allows users to easily send money to others, you could add an option for using the same app to pay bills.

A good way of discovering how to add value to what you’re marketing is by surveying your target audience and potential customers then find ways to expand or improve on your product to meet those needs.
